Chapter 4: Bloomsbury

Bloomsbury announced itself in stages. First the squares—small, formal gardens surrounded by terraced houses in the particular shade of London brick that Ed was beginning to think of as the color of the city itself. Then the institutional buildings: a museum, a university hall, a church with a square tower. Then the shops: antiquarian booksellers, a map shop, a bakery that smelled of yeast and sugar, a pub called The Swanne with a painted sign of a dog and a fox.

Ed stopped at the pub and went in and asked the barman—a thick-necked man in a white shirt with the sleeves rolled up—if anyone in the neighborhood had a room to let.

The barman looked at him the way Londoners looked at things: flatly, measuring, deciding. "What kind of room?"

"Any kind. I have limited funds."

"How limited?"

"Three pounds."

The barman snorted—not unkindly. "You'll be wanting Mrs. Hargreaves, then. She's got a room at seventeen Grena Road. Two doors past the post office. Ask for the front bedroom on the second floor. Tell her Bert sent you and she won't ask too many questions."

Ed thanked him and walked the two doors past the post office and found the house.

Number seventeen was a narrow, four-story Victorian terrace, painted the color of a bruise—dark red-brown, with white trim around the windows and a front door the green of old bottles. There was a brass knocker in the shape of a lion's head, and Ed used it, and the sound echoed inside the house like a small explosion.

The woman who opened the door was in her mid-fifties, with gray hair pinned back in a bun and a face that had the quality of weathered stone—smooth, hard, carved by time into something that could withstand pressure. She wore a dark cardigan over a print dress, and she looked at Ed the way the barman had looked at him, with the flat, measuring gaze of someone who had seen every type of person walk through that door and had decided in advance what she thought of them.

"Yes?"

"Mrs. Hargreaves?"

"I am."

"My name is Ed Morgan. A man at The Swanne—Bert—said you might have a room."

She looked at him. Looked at his sport coat, his American shoes, his face. "American," she said.

"Yes."

"British papers?"

"No."

She did not ask why. That was the first thing Ed understood about Dorothy Hargreaves: she did not ask questions whose answers she did not want to know. She stood in the doorway and weighed him, and after a moment she stepped aside and gestured him in.

"The front room on the second floor," she said. "One pound a week, inclusive of heating. Breakfast is tea and toast at seven. Dinner is at six. You will be present for dinner or you will do without. I do not hold plates."

"Yes, ma'am," Ed said, and then caught himself—ma'am was not a word that belonged here, but Dorothy Hargreaves did not correct him.

The hallway was narrow and dark, with a staircase that curved upward into shadow. The wallpaper was patterned with vines, and the carpet on the stairs was threadbare in the center where feet had worn a path over decades. There was a smell of furniture polish and something underneath it—something organic, living, the smell of a house where people ate and slept and argued and made up and died.

The front room on the second floor was small but clean. A single bed with a brass frame, a washstand with a bowl and pitcher, a wardrobe with a missing door knob, a window that looked out onto Grena Road and the back of the post office opposite. The curtains were heavy, dark green, and the light that came through them was the color of moss.

"One pound a week," Dorothy said from the doorway. "Pay on Monday. If you cannot pay on Monday, you will tell me before Monday, and we will discuss it like civilized people. If you disappear without telling me, I will assume you are dead and I will not grieve."

"I understand."

"Do you have luggage?"

"No."

She looked at him. "You have nothing."

"I have—" Ed stopped. He had his wallet, which was still in his inside pocket, though it now held only the three pounds he had been given at the Consulate and his California driver's license, which was worthless. He had the clothes he was standing in. He had his body, which was hungry and exhausted and not yet entirely convinced it was not dreaming.

"I have myself," he said.

Dorothy Hargreaves studied him for a moment. Then she went to the wardrobe and opened it and took out a blanket—wool, green, thick—and she laid it on the bed.

"There's a public bathhouse on Marchmont Street," she said. "Two streets east. You smell like a prison cell. Clean yourself up before dinner, or I will not feed you."

She left.

Ed stood in the room and looked at the bed and the washstand and the wardrobe and the green curtains, and he understood that this was his life now. This small room in a stranger's house in a city he did not know, with one pound to his name and no plan and no way home.

He sat on the bed. The springs creaked. The mattress was lumpy but clean. He could hear the sounds of the house around him—the creak of floorboards, the distant clatter of dishes, the murmur of a radio somewhere downstairs. Normal sounds. The sounds of a home.

He put his head in his hands and he wept.

He wept for the apartment on Steiner Street with its view of the bay and its half-dead potted plant and its stack of mathematics journals on the kitchen table. He wept for the Mattachine meetings in the church basement where he had sat in folding chairs and listened to men read statements about their right to exist, and he had thought: this is hard, this is dangerous, this is the price of being what I am. He wept for the life he had not appreciated—the freedom to walk down any street without papers, the right to exist without a form, the simple, unexamined luxury of being a person who belonged somewhere.

He wept for the crack in the alley, which he did not understand, which he could not explain, which had taken everything from him and given him nothing but this room and this city and this life that was not his.

He wept until he was empty, and then he lay back on the bed and stared at the ceiling and listened to the house breathe around him, and he thought: I am alive. I am in London. I have a roof over my head and a woman who will feed me and a room with a bed and a window and a wardrobe with a missing door knob.

It was not nothing.

He got up and washed his face in the cold water from the pitcher and went to find the bathhouse.

The bathhouse on Marchmont Street was a municipal building, red brick, with a sign that said PUBLIC BATHS and a fee of threepence. Ed paid his threepence and stood under a shower that was too hot and too hard and he let the water pound the grief out of his shoulders, and when he came out he felt—not better, exactly, but functional. He could function. He could do the next thing and then the next thing after that, and eventually he would arrive somewhere, or he would not, but at least he would be moving.

He returned to seventeen Grena Road at ten minutes to six and followed the smell of cooking to the kitchen, where Dorothy Hargreaves stood at a gas stove and stirred a pot of something that smelled of onions and lamb and the particular warmth of a meal that had been made with some degree of care.

"Wash your hands," she said without turning around.

He washed his hands at the sink—an old porcelain sink with a pump handle that required effort—and he dried them on a towel that hung from a hook on the wall, and he stood at the kitchen table and watched Dorothy plate the food.

There was no dining room. The kitchen table was the dining room. Dorothy set two places—across from each other, at the narrow end of the table—and she brought the plates over and sat down and looked at him.

"Sit," she said.

He sat.

The food was lamb stew, with dumplings, bread and butter and a glass of water. Ed ate like a man who had not eaten in two days, which was not quite true but close enough, and Dorothy watched him with an expression that was not quite sympathy but not quite disapproval either—the expression of a woman who had decided to feed him and was waiting to see if he deserved it.

When he had finished, she said: "You're a mathematician."

He looked up. "How did you know?"

"You have the hands of a man who writes. The fingers are too long for labor, too deliberate for art. Mathematics, I'd guess, or perhaps philosophy, though philosophers don't usually have your kind of stubbornness."

"Mathematics," Ed said. "Berkeley."

"California."

"Yes."

"And how does a mathematician from California come to arrive in London with no papers and three pounds and the face of a man who has lost everything?"

Ed looked at her. She was watching him with those stone-carved eyes, and he understood that she was not asking out of curiosity. She was asking because she needed to know who she was feeding, who she was letting sleep under her roof, who she was risking her house for.

She had her own reasons. He did not know what they were yet. But he understood that Dorothy Hargreaves was not a woman who did things without reason.

"I fell," he said. "I don't know how else to explain it. I fell, and I landed here, and I don't know how to get back."

"Fell from where?"

"San Francisco. From an alley behind a bookshop on Fillmore Street. There was a—a crack in the air, and I reached for it, and I came through."

Dorothy considered this. "You're mad," she said.

"Perhaps."

"Or you're lying, which is more likely."

"I'm not lying."

"No," she said, and something in her expression shifted, softened, became almost human. "No, I don't think you are. That's the trouble with you, Mr. Morgan. You don't know how to lie. It's written all over your face."

She took his plate and hers and stacked them in the sink, and she turned on the tap and began to wash up, and she said over her shoulder: "You will keep your head down. You will pay your rent on Monday. You will not bring trouble to my door. If you can do these things, you may stay. If you cannot, I will show you out and I will not be unkind about it, but I will show you out."

"I can do those things," Ed said.

"Good." She dried her hands on a towel and hung it back on its hook. "Seven o'clock. Breakfast. Don't be late."

She left the kitchen, and Ed sat alone at the table in the house that was not his home, in the city that did not know his name, and he thought about the crack in the alley, and he thought about Dorothy Hargreaves and her missing door knob and her lamb stew and her eyes that saw too much, and he thought about Turing, who had died in a world that wanted him erased, and he thought about himself, who had arrived in that world without warning and without permission, and he thought: I am here. I am alive. I have a room and a meal and a woman who is letting me stay.

It was not a life. But it was a place to start.

He climbed the stairs to the front room on the second floor, and he lay down on the lumpy mattress under the green wool blanket, and he looked at the ceiling in the dark and listened to the house breathe, and he did not weep again.

Tomorrow he would find work. Tomorrow he would begin to build something from nothing.

Tonight, he slept.
