The restaurant was on Hollywood Road, in a building so old the lift still had an operator — a man in his sixties who looked at Sebastian Ashford's suit and Dawn's borrowed clothes and said nothing, which was its own kind of commentary.
They sat at a table in the back. Sebastian Ashford had chosen it, which meant he had thought about it — had called ahead, asked for the quietest section, considered the optics of being seen with his almost-ex-wife in public. The thought of this effort, small as it was, made something twist in Dawn's chest.
She couldn't name it. She didn't try.
"I ordered already," he said. "I hope that's alright."
"You ordered for me."
"I ordered things you like. I remember."
She looked at him. He looked back. The waiter came and went. The food arrived — dishes she recognized, food she had cooked in the Ashford house kitchen before she stopped cooking, before she decided that making things for people who didn't notice was its own form of madness. There was the garoupa with ginger and spring onion, the way her mother-in-law liked it at formal dinners and the way Dawn had learned to make it because it was one of the few dishes that earned a nod of approval. There was steamed rice with century egg and pork, the kind of comfort food that had no business being at a restaurant this expensive and every business being exactly right. There was a soup she didn't immediately recognize — clear, pale, with something green floating in it.
"Watercress," Sebastian Ashford said, watching her look at it. "From the place in Stanley. They make it with pork and peanuts. You used to talk about it."
Dawn stared at him. She had mentioned the watercress soup once, years ago, in passing — a conversation about food from her childhood, about her father's side of the family, about the things she had eaten before her father died and her mother retreated into a version of herself that was always tired and always waiting. She had not thought he was listening. She had assumed, as she always assumed with Sebastian Ashford, that her words were going into a void.
"You remembered that," she said.
"I remember things."
"You remember a lot of things you never mentioned."
"Yes."
She ate. He ate. They didn't speak for five minutes, which was either progress or a disaster, and Dawn couldn't tell which.
"Tell me about your day," he said finally.
The question was so unexpected that Dawn almost laughed. He had never asked her about her day in five years of marriage. Not once. Not in any of the thousand variations of that question — how was your day, what did you do, anything interesting — none of which he had ever offered. And now, here, in a restaurant, with a divorce agreement filed and a meeting with Leon Mercer complete, he was asking.
"It was fine," she said.
"What did you do?"
"I met someone."
He put down his chopsticks. He did it carefully, deliberately — the same way he did everything, as if each action required a calculation of consequences.
"Who did you meet?"
"A man named Leon Mercer."
She watched his face. She had learned to read Sebastian Ashford's face in the first year of their marriage, and she had spent the subsequent four years wishing she hadn't. He was not expressive — his face was a landscape she had mapped in patience, learning which microexpressions preceded anger, which preceded the cold silence that was worse than anger. Now, she watched something move through him that she didn't immediately recognize.
"I know that name," he said quietly.
"I assumed you might."
"HL Group. They're—" He stopped. "They're significant."
"So I've heard."
"What did he want?"
"He wants me to style someone. An actress named Vanessa Lockhart."
Sebastian Ashford was very still. She could see him processing — the name, the implications, the particular irony of his wife going to work for the most talked-about woman in Asian entertainment while their marriage dissolved around them.
"Vanessa Lockhart," he repeated.
"You know her."
"I know of her."
"Everyone knows of her. That's not the same thing."
He looked at her. For a moment, she saw something raw — not the polished version of Sebastian Ashford that the world saw, the controlled heir to the Ashford fortune, but something younger, less certain. The boy he had been before the family taught him to be something else.
"I should tell you something," he said.
"You should tell me a lot of things. You've had five years."
"Dawn."
"Don't." She held up a hand. "Don't do that. Don't say my name like it means something. Not yet. Not until you know what you want to say."
He was quiet. The restaurant hummed around them — the soft clink of glasses, a murmur of conversation from another table, the particular frequency of people spending money to feel things.
"I went to the house," he said finally. "After you left. I looked at the carpet."
"Of course you did."
"It was champagne. Not wine. I thought it was wine for a moment — I thought you'd thrown red wine on my mother's white carpet, which would have been worse, which would have made sense, because at least that would have been anger I could understand. But it was champagne. White. Like you were toasting something."
"I was."
"What?"
Dawn put down her chopsticks. She looked at the food on her plate — the food he had ordered because he remembered what she liked, which was the most thought he'd given to her preferences in years, and she didn't know whether to be touched or furious.
"To five years," she said. "To the end of pretending."
He absorbed this. She could see him absorbing it — the way his jaw tightened, the way his hands went flat on the table, the way he pressed down on something rising in him.
"I didn't know you were pretending."
"You knew. You just didn't want to look at it."
"I looked—"
"You looked at the parts that were convenient. You looked at me the way you look at the business — as a thing to be managed, a problem to be solved. You never looked at me the way you look at—" She stopped. She hadn't planned to say this. "You never looked at me like I was a person."
The sentence hung between them. It was not an accusation, exactly. It was a fact — one she had known for five years and had never said out loud because saying it would make it real and because the marriage was already real enough without adding the weight of her dissatisfaction to it.
But now she was not in the marriage. Now she was sitting across from him in a restaurant and the marriage was a document on a coffee table in a house in Repulse Bay and she was here, and he was here, and something had shifted.
"Where will you go?" he asked.
"I don't know yet. Somewhere."
"Do you have money?"
"I have some."
"If you need—"
"Don't." She said it quietly but firmly. "Don't offer me money. I know you mean it kindly. I know you think you're supposed to. But I didn't leave so that you could take care of me. I left so that I could take care of myself."
He nodded. He looked down at his plate. He looked at his hands. He looked at the glass of wine he hadn't touched.
"I miss you," he said.
It was so unexpected — so far from the careful, managed Sebastian Ashford she had known — that she didn't know what to do with it. She sat very still and felt something crack open in her chest, not love, not yet, but something adjacent to it. Recognition. The acknowledgment that the man across from her was not only the husband who had failed her but also the person who had once, briefly, made her feel like she could be more than what the Ashford family needed her to be.
"You miss who I was when you weren't looking," she said carefully. "That's not the same thing."
"Isn't it?"
"I don't know. Is it?"
He looked at her. She looked at him. The restaurant went on around them, indifferent.
"I'm learning," he said quietly. "I'm trying to learn. I've never—" He stopped. He started again. "No one ever taught me how to do this. How to be with someone. How to be present. My mother taught me how to manage a household. My father taught me how to manage a business. Neither of them taught me how to be a person. I learned that later. I'm still learning it."
Dawn thought about this. She thought about the morning she had shown him the sketch — three years ago, the dress with the open back — and he had said nice and gone back to his laptop. She thought about all the times she had wanted to tell him something and hadn't, because she knew he wouldn't know what to do with it, and she had protected him from the discomfort of not knowing.
She had been doing it for years. She had been managing him, the way his family had taught her to manage him, the way he had never asked her to but had accepted anyway because acceptance was easier than effort.
But that was the thing, wasn't it? She had never been asked. She had assumed, and he had let her assume, and the assumptions had calcified into something neither of them could see around.
"I know," she said.
"That's not—" He stopped. "I don't want you to know. I want you to forgive."
"That's not something I can give you yet."
"When?"
"I don't know. Ask me again in a year. Maybe then I'll have an answer."
He nodded. He picked up his wine glass. He put it down without drinking.
"Can I see you again?" he asked.
"I don't know."
"That's more than you've said in five years."
She almost smiled. Almost.
"I have to tell you something," he said. "About Vanessa Lockhart."
Dawn went still. "What about Vanessa Lockhart?"
"She wanted me once. Years ago. Before you and I met." He was not looking at her. He was looking at his wine glass. "I rejected her. Publicly. At a party my family was hosting. It was — I was younger and stupider and I thought I was being honorable. I told her I was already engaged to be married, which was a lie. There was no one. I just didn't know what else to say."
Dawn said nothing.
"She's never forgotten it. Neither have I." He finally looked up. "I'm telling you because you should know. The woman you're going to work for — she and I have history. It doesn't change anything. It probably doesn't change anything for her either. But I wanted you to hear it from me."
"Why?"
"Because you left. Because you're building something. Because—" He stopped. "Because I want to be the one who tells you things now. Not the newspapers. Not the gossip. Me."
The waiter came by. He refilled their water. He left. The restaurant continued its particular hum.
"Thank you," Dawn said quietly.
"For what?"
"For telling me. For—" She paused. "For trying."
He nodded. He picked up his wine glass. This time he drank.
They sat for another hour. They talked about nothing — the city, the weather, a film they had both seen and never discussed. They did not talk about the marriage. They did not talk about the future. They talked like two people who had just met and were still deciding whether they liked each other, which was, Dawn realized, something like the truth.
He paid. They walked out into the Hollywood Road night, where the air was warm and the bars were full and the city was doing its thing — making noise, making money, making meaning out of nothing. He walked her to the MTR station. She didn't ask him to. He did it anyway, which was either progress or the same old pattern, and she couldn't tell.
At the entrance to the station, she stopped.
"Sebastian Ashford."
"Yes."
"Thank you for dinner."
He looked at her. He didn't say you're welcome. He didn't say anything. He just looked at her, and she looked back, and for a moment — just a moment — they were two people who had once loved each other standing in a crowd, trying to remember what that had felt like.
Then he said: "Good luck with Vanessa Lockhart."
"You know about that?"
"I know everything about you now. I'm trying to." He paused. "I'm sorry I didn't try before."
She turned and walked into the station. She didn't look back.
She took the MTR to Sheung Wan. She walked up the hill to Lily's apartment. She climbed the stairs slowly, feeling each step, thinking about the conversation, about Sebastian Ashford's face when he said I miss you, about the way she had protected him for five years and how she was going to have to stop, and how that was going to hurt both of them.
She thought about Vanessa Lockhart. About the woman who had wanted Sebastian Ashford and been refused. About what it meant that Dawn was going to work for her.
She thought: the world is smaller than I knew.
But that was for later. Tomorrow she was meeting Vanessa Lockhart.
Tonight she was just going to sit with it — the dinner, the revelation, the crack that had opened in her chest when he said her name.
She wasn't ready to close it yet.
She wasn't sure she wanted to.
