Lily came home at 7pm carrying two bags of takeout and a bottle of wine that she set on the counter with the authority of someone who had earned it.
"I have news," she announced.
"You found out about Leon Mercer."
"I found out about Leon Mercer and then I found out about other things, because I am thorough and because I have no life." Lily started unpacking the food — dim sum, the good kind from the place on Queen's Road that cost twice as much as the others. "Sit. Eat. Then I'll tell you everything."
They ate. The dim sum was extraordinary — Lily had ordered the full spread, which meant there were things Dawn didn't recognize and things she recognized too well, the dishes her mother used to make when Dawn was small and the world was still a place where her father was alive and her mother was capable of joy. There were har gow that were almost translucent, prawns in the shell perfectly cooked. There were cheung fun with the kind of sauce that made you want to eat the whole plate and then ask for more. There were egg tarts from a bakery that Dawn had once walked past every day on her way to the MTR and never once stopped at.
She used to walk past it thinking: someday. Someday she would stop. Someday she would buy herself an egg tart and eat it on the street like a normal person who did normal things for herself.
Someday had not come.
"What did you find?" Dawn asked, when they were halfway through.
"Leon Mercer. Fifty-three. Harvard MBA, which is annoying, but fine. Founded HL Group in 2008 with seed money from his father — his father was in shipping, died in 2010, left everything to a foundation because Leon Mercer was already disgustingly successful by then. He has a reputation for finding talent in unexpected places. Three stylists, four actors, two directors — all people who were nobody before he got involved and are somebody now."
"And the sketchbook?"
Lily hesitated. This was unlike her. Lily did not hesitate. Lily said the difficult thing immediately and then apologized if it turned out to be unnecessary.
"What?"
"He has a file on you."
"A file."
"A folder. On his computer. I got into his LinkedIn — don't look at me like that, he has a public profile with an email address that had a data breach in 2023, I didn't do anything illegal. The folder is called YAN, D. — it has three subfolders. One called 'initial contact,' one called 'progress,' and one called 'timeline.'"
Dawn put down her chopsticks. She had been holding them without eating for the past minute, the food cooling on her plate.
"He didn't find your sketchbook by accident," Lily continued, carefully. "He's been watching you for three years. Since you left Central Saint Martins. Since before you married Sebastian Ashford, as far as I can tell from the dates."
"That's—"
"I know."
"That's creepy."
"Also extremely useful, if you're the kind of person who can use being watched." Lily poured them both wine. "The question is: what does he want?"
Dawn didn't answer. She was thinking about the email — I've seen your final collection. Someone forwarded me your sketchbook three years ago. Not I've had your sketchbook for three years. Not I've been following your career. Someone forwarded it. Which meant someone had sent it to him. Which meant someone else knew about the sketchbook, and had thought of Leon Mercer, and had made the connection.
"Who forwarded it?" she asked.
"That's the thing. I can't find out. Whoever it was, they did it anonymously. But it was sometime in the past two months, because Leon Mercer's activity log shows he accessed the file for the first time in April."
"Two months ago."
"Which is right around when you started talking about leaving."
Dawn sat back. She thought about the chain of events — the sketchbook from three years ago, the anonymous forwarding two months ago, the email at 11:47 on the night she left. It felt like something was being arranged. Not by accident. Not by fate. By someone who knew things she didn't know and was moving pieces she couldn't see.
The thought should have been frightening. It was, partly. But there was another feeling underneath the fear, one she didn't expect: relief. Because being watched — being seen — was what she had wanted all along. She had just been looking for it in the wrong places, from the wrong people. She had been looking for Sebastian Ashford to see her. She had been looking for her mother-in-law to acknowledge her. She had been looking for the Ashford family to recognize that she existed.
And they never had. And she had stayed anyway, because she had confused their indifference with safety, had believed that if they didn't look at her they couldn't hurt her.
But a stranger had looked at her work and kept it in a file. A stranger had seen something in her sketchbook three years ago and held onto it. A stranger had been watching and waiting and when the moment came, he had been ready.
"Maybe I shouldn't meet him," Dawn said.
"Maybe you should meet him and find out what he wants before you decide whether you want to give it to him."
"Lily—"
"Dawn." Lily leaned forward. "You walked out of a marriage yesterday. You are living in my spare room with two suitcases and fourteen thousand dollars and no plan. A powerful man in this city has been watching you for three years and has just invited you to a meeting. You can be scared of that, or you can walk into that meeting knowing that you have something he wants and make him show his cards first."
"I don't know what I have."
"Yes, you do." Lily's voice was gentle, which was worse than if she'd been sharp. "You have a degree from the best fashion school in the world and a final collection that a stranger kept in a file for three years. You have talent, which is rarer than you think and worth more than you know. You just haven't let yourself believe it."
Dawn was quiet for a long time.
"You've been telling me this story for five years," she said finally. "When were you going to stop being the person in it?"
Lily blinked.
"I'm serious," Dawn said. "You keep telling me I'm talented. You keep telling me I should work. You keep — you've been doing this since we graduated. And I kept not doing it. I kept finding reasons. The marriage, the family, the timing, the economy, whatever. I had a hundred reasons not to start and I used every single one of them."
"And now?"
"Now I don't have any reasons left." Dawn picked up her wine glass. She looked at it — the color, the way the light moved through it. "Or rather — I still have the reasons. I just stopped believing they were enough to stop me."
Lily nodded slowly. She took a sip of her own wine. She set it down carefully.
"Okay," she said. "So what are you going to do?"
Dawn took a sip of wine. She thought about it — not the meeting with Leon Mercer, which was a decision for tomorrow, but the larger thing. The thing she had been avoiding for five years. The thing she had married Sebastian Ashford to avoid, because marriage was a reason not to try and trying was terrifying.
The thing she had told herself she would do someday, when the timing was right, when she was ready, when the world aligned in exactly the right way.
Someday had arrived. It was a Tuesday night in July. She was sitting in Lily's apartment eating dim sum and drinking wine and she had nothing — no husband, no plan, no safety net. She had two suitcases and fourteen thousand dollars and a sketchbook that someone else had believed in.
"I'm going to reply to the email," she said. "I'm going to meet with him. And I'm going to find out if I'm as good as someone thought I was three years ago."
"What if you're not?"
Dawn smiled. It was not a happy smile, exactly. It was the smile of someone who has accepted a risk and decided to take it anyway.
"Then I'll find out," she said. "And I'll deal with that too."
They finished the dim sum. They finished the wine. Lily told her about the client lunch — the tech founder had cried during dessert, which was not in the PR playbook, and Lily had handled it by pretending to cry too, which had made him laugh, which had made him sign the contract. This was Lily's method: meet chaos with chaos, meet sincerity with sincerity, never let them see you sweat.
"It's not a bad strategy," Dawn said.
"It's the only strategy. You think I got where I am by being normal about things?" Lily stood up and started clearing the plates. "Half of PR is just convincing people you're more together than they are. The other half is knowing when to fall apart."
"When do you fall apart?"
"When I'm alone. Like everyone else." Lily smiled. "You just don't see it because I'm better at hiding it than most."
They talked for another hour — about nothing, about everything, about the particular kind of loneliness that came from living in a city of seven million people and knowing that most of them didn't see you. About what it meant to be a woman in Hong Kong who wanted things that didn't fit neatly into the boxes the culture had prepared. About the way Lily had learned to perform confidence the way other people performed certainty, as a survival strategy.
At midnight, Dawn went to the spare room. She opened her laptop. She stared at the screen for a long time.
She typed:
Mr. Leon Mercer —
Tomorrow at 2pm works. The Upper House.
I'm available.

She read it three times. She added: Thank you for keeping the sketchbook. She deleted that line. She added it again. She deleted it. She sent the version without it.
She closed the laptop. She lay down on the bed. She stared at the ceiling and thought about a man who had watched her for three years, and a sketchbook full of dresses she had designed when she still believed she could be someone, and the morning she had shown one of those dresses to her husband and he had said nice and gone back to his laptop.
She thought about all the times she had wanted to say something and hadn't.
She was going to say something now.
She didn't know what yet. But she was going to say it.
She fell asleep thinking about the Upper House, about a man with silver at his temples, about the sound of champagne pouring onto white carpet, about the way it felt to pour something out instead of swallowing it.
She dreamed of fabric — silk, organza, the rustle of something beautiful being made by hand.
In the dream, she was drawing. The pencil moved fast. The lines were good.
She woke up at dawn and the dream was already fading, but the feeling stayed — the feeling of making something, of being someone who made things.
It was the best dream she'd had in five years.
She got up. She showered. She put on clothes that were not yesterday's clothes, because Lily had lent her some — a linen shirt, trousers that were slightly too short, a blazer that was slightly too big. She looked at herself in the mirror. She looked like someone who was going to a meeting. She looked like someone who had somewhere to be.
She looked, she realized, like someone who was becoming someone.
She went to meet a man who had been waiting three years to meet her.
